필요보다는 수련 내지는 학습의 목적, 밑줄치며 교과서 넘기는 기분으로 Gmail을 쓰면서, BK에게 Gmail의 특별함을 물었다. 영어로 물어봤더니 영어로 답장이 왔더라. Gmail로 들어가면 왠지 못해도 영어를 써야 할 것만 같은 기분을 주는 구글은 확실히 글로벌 브랜드다. 사실은 그냥 막연히 한글 지원이 안 될 것 같아서 그런거였지만. :-p

아 물론 Gmail 한글 지원된다. 메일 서비스란게 경우의 수도 무진장 많고 로컬의 특성을 너무 많이 타서, 고작 한글 메일 몇 번 보내보고 완벽하다고는 단정할 수는 없겠지만.

BK가 꼽은 다른 메일과 다른 Gmail의 특성은 다음 세 가지. 그의 동의하에 원본을 첨부한다. 여튼 그에게는 1GB라는 용량은 감동적이지 않았나보다. 난 그 1GB로 구글이 사람들에게 무슨 새로운 걸 하게 할지가 기대된다. 메일박스라는 미개척지에서 벌어지는 새로운 habit의 창조.

• short cut : 키보드 숏컷을 지원하는 인터페이스
• conversation : 특정 그룹과 오간 관련 메일을 파일링해서 보여주는 기능 (적절한 설명인가?)
• contact auto completion : 주소 자동 입력. 마치 아웃룩처럼

  

그런데 이것 뿐인가?

Do you want to know what is the difference between gmail and other mail services?

I think the most impressive feature of the gmail is the convenient user interface for me. Concretely speaking, the convenient user interface is refer to “short cut”, “conversation”, “contact autocompletion”.

The “Short cut” feature is somewhat difficult for some people but once you are good at short cut, it’s really really powerfull. How about trying to use it. It’s my favorite feature of the gmail. “Short cut” feature is not default feature so you enable it at the settings screen.

The “Conversation” feature is seeing the mail messages like conversation. You wrote a mail and I reply you. And you reply me. Gmail shows the mails between you and me like conversation. Maybe you can make a sense reading this mail.

And the last, the “contact auto completion” is useful when you write a mail. When you type receipient’s mail address, gmail is completing the receipient’s mail address automatically like windows mail client application. When you write a mail to me later, typing “a” in the “To” textbox, you can see my mail address “andrew724@gmail.com”. You can just select my mail address by pressing arrow key and hit enter.

1GB mail capacity is not impressive for me. Ask other people about gmail, too.
